SafePlate (“SafePlate,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) helps people with food allergies scan restaurant menus and see guidance labeled Safe, Ask kitchen, or Avoid. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.
By using SafePlate’s website or mobile application (the “Service”), you agree to this Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
1. Who we are
SafePlate is operated by an individual developer. For privacy questions, contact us at hello@safeplate.app.
2. Information we collect
Depending on how you use SafePlate, we may collect:
- Allergen profile. Allergens you select or add (for example peanut, dairy, gluten, shellfish, or custom allergens) so we can personalize scan results.
- Menu photos. Images you capture or upload to analyze a menu. These are sent to our servers and AI providers solely to produce dish-level guidance for that request.
- Scan history. Recent analysis results stored on your device (and, if you sign in later, possibly in your account) so you can revisit them.
- Usage and device data. App interactions, approximate scan counts for free and paid quotas, device type, OS version, and crash/diagnostic data needed to keep the Service working.
- Subscription status. Whether you have an active SafePlate subscription. Purchases are processed by Apple (App Store) or Google (Play Billing) and may be validated through RevenueCat. We do not receive your full payment card number.
- Communications. Messages you send us (for example support emails to hello@safeplate.app).
We do not require a SafePlate account to use core scanning features today. If we add account sign-in later, this Policy will be updated to describe account data.
3. How we use information
We use the information above to:
- Provide menu analysis and personalized Safe / Ask kitchen / Avoid guidance;
- Enforce free and paid scan quotas;
- Operate, maintain, secure, and improve the Service;
- Process subscriptions and restore purchases;
- Respond to support requests and send service notices when needed;
- Comply with law and protect our rights and users’ safety.
We do not sell your personal information. We do not use menu photos to train public marketing models for unrelated products.
4. How menu analysis works
When you scan a menu, compressed images and your allergen list are sent to our backend (currently hosted with Supabase Edge Functions) and processed by an AI provider (currently Anthropic) to extract dishes and estimate allergen relevance. Results are estimates based on visible menu text and your profile — not a guarantee of safety. Always confirm with restaurant staff before eating.
5. Third parties we rely on
We share data with service providers only as needed to run SafePlate, including:
- Supabase — backend hosting and related infrastructure;
- Anthropic — AI processing of menu images and allergen context;
- Apple — App Store distribution, In-App Purchases, and device services;
- Google — Google Play distribution and Play Billing;
- RevenueCat — subscription status and purchase validation;
- Hosting tools — for this website (for example Vercel or Netlify).
These providers process data under their own privacy terms and only on our instructions where applicable.
6. Retention
Menu images are processed to fulfill your request and are not kept longer than needed for that analysis, debugging serious failures, abuse prevention, or legal obligations. Local allergen settings and history remain on your device until you clear app data or uninstall.
7. Security
We use industry-standard safeguards appropriate to a small consumer app (HTTPS, access controls on secrets, least-privilege keys). No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. Please avoid photographing menus that contain unrelated personal documents.
8. Children’s privacy
SafePlate is not directed to children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact hello@safeplate.app and we will delete it.
9. Your choices
- Edit or clear allergens and history in the app (or by deleting the app).
- Decline camera or photo permissions (scanning features will not work without them).
- Manage or cancel subscriptions in your Apple ID or Google Play subscription settings.
- Ask privacy questions at hello@safeplate.app.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or export personal data, or to object to certain processing. Email us to exercise those rights. We may need to verify your request.
10. International users
We may process information in the United States or other countries where our providers operate. If you use SafePlate from elsewhere, you understand that your information may be transferred to those locations.
11. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the revised version on this page with an updated effective date. Continued use of the Service after changes means you accept the updated Policy.
